The Benefits

Gasplasma® generates clean energy with low residues.

It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and has a small physical footprint.

 

Physical footprint

A Gasplasma® plant has a stack height of only 25m (82ft) and a physical footprint of less than 8,000m2 (86,111ft2), roughly the same size as a retail warehouse.  This means that you can fit a plant into an industrial site and it is unlikely to raise planning objections.

APP's facilities can be built on a scale to meet the needs of local communities.  A single plant would be about the right size to handle waste from a city borough.

 

Combined heat and power (CHP)

A 150,000 tonne per year Gasplasma® plant could provide enough combined heat and power for an industrial or residential development. 

 

Landfill diversion

98% of the original waste is diverted from landfill by processes of recycling, gasification and vitrifying ash into Plasmarok®.  The remaining 2% are residues, from the gas clean up process, are sent to landfill.

No other waste-to-energy technology can meet this level of diversion.  As the cost of landfill increasing dramatically, the level of diversion of any treatment process has become crucial, and Gasplasma® is in a class of its own.

 

Recycling

At the front end of a plant is a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF).  Glass, metals and hard plastics and stones can be removed from the waste, providing an additional revenue stream.

 

Greenhouse gas emissions

Wardell-Armstrong conducted an independent analysis of the CO2 emissions of the Gasplasma® process; it has an overall negative carbon footprint of -341kg CO2/MWh.  Incineration produces 230 kg CO2/MWh, and as the average carbon emitted from UK power generators at present is 430 kg CO2/MWh.

 

Plasmarok

Plasmarok®  is vitrified soot and ash from the syngas.  It is created when the syngas passes through the plasma arc.  Plasmarok® is approved by the UK Environment Agency as fully recovered as it leaves the plasma arc and it can be used as an aggregate.  Read more>>
