What is the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)?
The Industrial Emissions Directive is a new legislation that replaces a number of European Union environmental legislations including the Waste Incineration Directive (WID). In November 2005 the European Commission launched a review of the legislation of industrial emissions. Their goal was to have clear legislation for all industries to follow, to promote economic and technological development, whilst maintaining the highest standards for human health and environmental protection. In December 2007 the commission proposed the new Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) which coalesced seven existing directives, including the Waste Incineration Directive (WID). In November 2010 the new Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) was ratified by the European Council.
What is the European Union Landfill Directive?
The European Union Landfill Directive places stringent technical requirements for the depositing of waste into landfill sites. The goal of the EU Landfill Directive is to prevent or reduce the adverse effects of the landfill of hazardous, non-hazardous and inert wastes on the environment specifically relating to surface water, groundwater, soil and human health.
